Ride Safe, Ride Smart!

July 6, 2009 by friendsofsalemsaturdaymarket

Bike Valet logoDid you know that approximately 50% of all trips to the grocery store, work, school, etc, are less than 3 miles? These trips can be perfect opportunities to enjoy the health, wealth, and enjoyment of traveling by bicycle.

Come to Friends of Salem Saturday Market’s free one-hour bicycle workshop on July 11 and learn tips to get you there safely and conveniently on your bike. The workshop will focus on the pre-ride safety check, traffic laws as they pertain to cyclists, crash avoidance strategies, tips for being more visible and more predictable, and route choice. The workshop will offer advice for adult and younger riders. It will be beside the FSSM booth at 11 a.m.

The instructors, Robert Fox and Gary Obery, are Certified Instructors through the League of American Cyclists. Robert teaches a Bicycle Safety class to fifth graders at a number of Salem-Keizer elementary schools each spring. Gary is employed as a professional traffic engineer. Robert and Gary have been active in local adult cycling education and advocacy efforts through the Bicycle Transportation Alliance and the Salem Bicycle Club.

And if you want to ride your bike to the Market, Friends of Salem Saturday Market now offers free bike valet parking every Saturday. Drop off your bike at the Union Street corral, and we’ll keep it safe while you attend the workshop.
